Dear Friends of Kairos,
Since taking over as Artistic Director of Kairos in 1996, I have had the great good fortune to work with and learn from an extraordinary ensemble of musicians. Starting with a focus on Renaissance madrigals and motets, we expanded our horizons to include Baroque masterworks such as the Monteverdi Vespers of 1610 and the Bach Mass in B Minor, as well as many choral masterworks from later centuries. We recorded two full CDs, the Christmas album Christus Natus Est and The Valley Sings, which features music by composers of the Hudson Valley. Beginning in 2006, we presented a Bach Cantata Series, performing 52 of Bach’s approximately 200 sacred cantatas in the welcoming acoustical environment of Holy Cross Monastery. We are grateful to the Holy Cross community for providing a home for our musical explorations, not only of Bach but of a wide range of choral music; to our instrumentalists for their fine and sensitive playing; and to our audience for supporting and sustaining our ventures into sometimes-obscure corners of the repertoire.
I have now retired from my position at SUNY-New Paltz and moved away from the Hudson Valley, along with Carol, my wife and co-conspirator in Kairos. We will miss our friends and musical collaborators but look forward to a new direction for Kairos.
